Words and Images by Nordi

Retro futurism is a unique trend that combines elements of the style of the past and dreams of the future. Inspired by science fiction and technological advances of the 20th century, this style creates a special atmosphere in which nostalgia and optimism are intertwined. In interior design , retro futurism helps us not only to remember how people imagined the future, but also to create a space filled with amazing shapes and bright colours.

The History of Retro Futurism:

Retro futurism has its roots in the 1940s to 1960s, when designers and artists tried to imagine what life would look like in the future. Movies, comics, and illustrations of the time were replete with images of flying saucers, lunar colonies, and exotic technologies. These ideas reflected the hopes and dreams of society that technology could change lives for the better.

Design Principles.

To create a retro-futurist interior, it is important to consider several key aspects:

1. **Shape and Function**: Retro-futuristic designs often stand out for their geometric and organic shapes. Use furniture with smooth lines and unusual silhouettes – for example, armchairs with rounded backs or tables with asymmetrical legs.

2. **Colour Palette**: Bright, saturated colours are one of the distinctive features of retro futurism. Combine shades such as orange, blue, yellow and green to create a playful and cheerful atmosphere.

3. **Technological Elements**: Include elements that recall technological achievements. These can be lamps with metal shades, retro radios, or objects inspired by space themes, such as models of rockets or satellites.

4. **Art and Decor**: Use posters and paintings depicting futuristic landscapes and space travel. You can also add accents in the form of sculptures or artifacts that emphasise the connection with science fiction.

How to Bring Retro Futurism to Interior Design:

1. **Furniture**: Choose items that match the style of the 50s and 60s, such as Eames chairs or coffee tables with smooth lines. If you want to create a unique accent, consider restoring old furniture with the addition of bright upholstery.

2. **Lighting**: Lamps in the style of the “space age” can become real star accents. Pay attention to the models with metal and glass elements, which will create the effect of lightness and lightness.

3. **Textiles**: Use fabrics with geometric patterns that were popular in the mid-20th century. Pillows, curtains and carpets with bright prints can add dynamism and comfort to the space.

4. **Decorative Elements**: Do not be afraid to experiment with unusual decorative items. For example, models of spaceships, vintage maps, or books about science and technology can be interesting accents.

Conclusion:

Retro futurism is not just a style, but a whole philosophy that combines dreams of the future and memories of the past. By creating an interior like this, you will not only plunge into the atmosphere of space travel, but also give your space (pun intended) a unique character. Be inspired by the ideas of the 20th century and create a place that will delight the eye and inspire new discoveries!
